Hemp Insurance

Hemp coverage is now available through Federal Crop Insurance! This coverage is very basic and there are many qualifications for eligibility, but we’ve tried to summarize the broad strokes below.

The hemp insurance policy is production based and will cover any natural cause of loss, excluding THC levels above 0.3%, seed contamination, or the inability to sell the crop. 

Optional Unit and Enterprise Unit Coverage levels will be offered from the 50% to 75% levels as well as a CAT plan. 

What you need to qualify for Federal Crop Insurance on Hemp:

  • Must have planted hemp for at least 1 year.

  • Must have a processor contract.

  • Must meet minimum acreage requirements.

  • Cannot plant on acres that was in hemp in the previous year.

  • Cannot plant double crop hemp.


Important Dates for Hemp Coverage 

  • Sales Closing Date is February 28, 2025  

  • June 20th, 2025 final planting date, with no late planting period. 

  • Acreage Reporting date: July 31st, 2025

Your guarantee and premium will be based on a combination of your production history and the commodity price election as determined by RMA.

RMA price election:

Fiber $0.14/lb 

Grain $0.70/lb

Transplant CBD Whole Plant $1.09/lb 

Transplant CBD Flower $2.18/lb

Minimum Acreage to Qualify for Coverage

CBD:  5 acres

Fiber/Grain: 20 acres

Required by February 28  

  • Signed Crop Insurance Application  

  • A record of production evidence from FSA  

  • A record of official THC testing of hemp ONLY if an FSA production record is not available. 

  • If production or testing records are not provided, then coverage will be denied. 


Acreage Reporting Requirements: 

  • GPS coordinates of the location of the Hemp must be provided on the Acreage Report in addition to each FSA Farm\Tract\Field 

  • Must have the producer’s certification and license number  

  • Must have a copy of the official certification form OR license to produce hemp.  

  • The processor contracts.
